Separate Skins: African-American Teenage Girls and the Barbie Complex

I was browsing around on understandingrace.org, which has a lot of really great information and articles regarding ideas about race in contemporary culture. We’ll be referencing this site a lot in the coming weeks, so it’s worth a look around. The first thing that really grabbed my attention was this video, a 7-minute documentary about the pressures to look “white” as perceived by a group of African-American teenage girls. Read more
